Moira talks about tramping with Yvonne Hynson

Yvonne:  This afternoon I’m talking to Moira. (M: Hi!) Moira would you like to tell us what we are going to talk about today?
Moira:  Yes, I’d like to share (with) you some ideas with tramping. 
Y:  OK.  Now Americans say hiking.  This is a real Kiwi word, isn’t it, tramping?
M:  Yes, yeah.
Y:  So what, what….When you say tramping, what do you think of when you think of tramping?
M:  By tramping we mean going out in our bush, native bush*.  Quite heavy going stuff, you have to be quite fit.  (Y:  Mmhuh)  Arh, so we have to… put special boots on and wear clothes that …give out the heat (waves her hands away from her body) and things like that.  But yeah, we just like to experience the bush and even live out there for a few days at a time.  In the bush….(Y: Yeah, so …..)

M:  Yeah, yeah….
Y: OK .  So what’s the most exciting thing for you about ….tramping?
M:  I think one of the most exciting things is I love staying in the huts.  It’s so different.  We all live in houses and go to work each day and we’re all very busy and well I live in the city now as well – a very urban environment.  So, to go out to a hut where there’s … nothing there except a bit of wood (uses hands to show wood is the bed) and a mattress to sleep on, it’s just lovely…you….

M:  I’ll just pop it on to show you (indicates red and black backback).. When it’s heavy I give it to someone else to hold (Moves arms and backpack to imaginary person) because otherwise you can pull muscles on your shoulders (Shows muscle area on her shoulders) when you’re twisting them on top and it gets a lot of strain on the strap but when it’s empty like this it’s easy. So you just hook it over. (Puts her right arm into the strap and then her left arm. And see you’ve got nice soft patches here (points with fingers to the straps) to protect you. (Y: Mmmhmm).  At the front here we’ve got these (moves straps) that come around.  Just click in like that and you pull it… like that to keep it nice and firm, weight on your hips. You also have one that goes across here ( clicks straps together) and this helps to spread the load (shows you with her hands) across your shoulders a bit so it’s not all just pushing on one part of your body (Points to her hips).  So that gives you a nice… the weight fairly high up, but not bumping on your bottom as well (points to her bottom).  Be careful that you can walk freely.  And the top has to be careful so that it’s not bumping onto your head.  So you need to pack things inside (points to the top of the pack) so that it’s comfortable for you as well.

*native bush means the New Zealand forest.  Australians also use the word bush to mean Australian forest.
